Sydney Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. He teaches executive education at the Tuck School (where he serves as the Faculty Director of the flagship Tuck Executive Program), and also has experience working with executives at Northwestern, Wharton, Duke, Bocconi, London Business School, Australian Graduate School of Management, Melbourne Business School, Hanoi School of Business, the Chalmers School (Sweden) and the Helsinki School of Economics. He holds degrees from Concordia University and the London School of Economics, as well as a Ph.D. from Columbia University in strategic management.
Professor Finkelstein has published 11 books and over 60 articles, including the #1 bestseller in the U.S. and Japan, Why Smart Executives Fail. Based on a six-year study of 51 companies and 200 interviews of business leaders, the book identifies the fundamental reasons why major mistakes happen, points out the early warning signals that are critical for investors and managers alike, and offers ideas on how organizations can develop a capability of learning from corporate mistakes. Professor Finkelstein has conducted extensive research on strategic leadership and corporate governance, and published numerous articles in the major journals in his field. He is an expert on mergers and acquisitions, executive decision-making, executive compensation, and boards of directors. He has participated on numerous CEO forums, been interviewed or had his work appear in numerous leading media outlets, and served as consultant and speaker for major companies around the world.
Jo Whitehead, MA, MBA, PhD, is a Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, which was formed in 1987 to research issues concerned with the management of multibusiness companies. His current research is into strategic decision making, building on prior research conducted at London Business School. Jo’s other interests includes running and providing management programmes and consulting to client companies.
Before joining Ashridge, Jo was a Vice President and Director of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He worked in the London, Los Angeles and Atlanta offices and acted as BCG’s Director of Energy Research and Marketing. Jo also worked as an Assistant Professor at London Business School, where he taught primarily on Executive Education programmes. Jo has particular research, consulting and teaching experience with commodity industries, in particular the energy business. He holds an MA from Cambridge University, an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School and a PhD in Strategy and Organisation from London Business School where he is currently a Fellow of the Centre for Management Development.
Andrew Campbell, BA, MA, MBA, is a Director of Ashridge Strategic Management Centre, which was formed in 1987 to research issues concerned with the management of multi-business companies. Andrew's work includes directing research projects, running management programmes and consulting to client companies. He is co-programme director of Group Level Strategy, Strategic Decisions and Making Successful Acquisitions.
Before joining Ashridge, Andrew was a Fellow of the Centre for Business Strategy at London Business School. Prior to that, he spent six years with McKinsey & Co in Los Angeles and London. Andrew has authored 10 books based on his research and has also published numerous articles including six with the Harvard Business Review. Andrew did an MA at Edinburgh and an MBA at Harvard, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar and Harkness Fellow.
